When people hear the word Leprosy, the looming stature is a scruffy, shabby, and the poor. Leprosy disease is always attached to the negative conditions and poverty. In fact, many people assume that Leprosy is hereditary and disease caused by the curse that acts violating the social norms and religious person does. Since the time of BCE people who have Leprosy always scorned and excluded from social interaction.
In 2000 there was leprosy control program in several provinces in Indonesia has reached elimination in accordance with WHO standards (found in less than 1 patient baru/10.000 population) and report showed that new patients start to decline every year. Although the number of new patients each year decline, the social problem remains affects to the people affected by leprosy. Most of people affected by leprosy are living in poverty and backwardness. This occurs because the strength of stigma and discrimination behaviors experienced by those who living with the community.
On 15th of February, 2007 in Jakarta, 12 representatives of people affected by leprosy from East Java, East Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi agreed to declare the establishment of the Association of Independent Leprosy (PerMaTa Indonesia). Permata Indonesia is expected to be organization acomodates aspirations of people affected by leprosy in voicing their human rights.
